The Ōtakaro Avon River Corridor (OARC) is 602-hectares in eastern Ōtautahi with the Ōtakaro Avon River at its heart. We are planting back the majestic tōtara, kahikatea and mataī that used to dominate the region and there is work underway to extend the natural wetlands. The plants will shore up the river banks from erosion, encourage native species to return and help the city adapt to the changing climate. And they will provide a world-class green space for residents and visitors to enjoy. The work is well underway. Old residential neighbourhoods are now dotted with seedlings. As the plants grow, the Green Zone will fill with native plants, birds, lizards and bugs.
